"In my view, climate change is the most severe problem that we are facing today --
more serious even than the threat of terrorism."

David A. King, Chief Scientific Advisor to the British Government, brought the issue of global warming into sharp focus in 2004.

MiAMI LAKES CONGREGATION IS GOING GREEN---- BUILDING A BETTER WORLD

“On Feb. 2, 2007, the United Nations scientific panel studying climate change declared that the evidence of a warming trend is "unequivocal," and that human activity has "very likely" been the driving force in that change over the last 50 years. The last report by the group, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in 2001, had found that humanity had "likely" played a role.” New York Times, March 28, 2008.

Our Church Council approved to adopt anenvironmental Mission Statement drafted by Ms. Christina DeProspero, a member of our church and a biologist employed by Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM). Our Mission Statement reads as follows:

It is the mission of the Miami Lakes Congregational Church to accept and
achieve the ENERGY STAR Challenge and reduce the energy used by 10% or
more. In addition, the MLCC will strive to make Green choices throughout
the office, school, church and congregation to solve, rather than cause both
environmental and social problems throughout the world.

The ENERGY STAR Challenge is a national call-to-action to improve the energy efficiency of America’s commercial and industrial buildings by 10 percent or more.

WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?

It is time for everyone to take action to reduce global warming. It is said that 1 person out of 100 will take action. This person will bring 9 more people on board, so only 10% of people will do something about it. INERTIA RULES? The remaining 90% will almost certainly do nothing, and outwardly register little or no interest either. We still have time to do something about it, but we need to reverse those percentage numbers. We all need to get out of our comfort zone, spend more time being part of the solution and not being part of the problem.

WHAT DO YOUR ACTIONS SAY ABOUT YOU?

Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere and temperatures are rising.

The vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is real, it's already happening and that it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurrence. 1 The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. We're already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing

The average American generates about 15,000 pounds of carbon dioxide every year from personal transportation, home energy use and from the energy used to produce all of the products and services we consume.

There is no doubt we can solve this problem. In fact, we have a moral obligation to do so. Small changes to your daily routine can add up to big differences in helping to stop global warming. The time to come together to solve this problem is now -
TAKE ACTION

Most emissions from homes are from the fossil fuels burned to generate electricity and heat. By using energy more efficiently at home, you can reduce your emissions and lower your energy bills by more than 30%. In addition, since agriculture is responsible for about a fifth of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, you can reduce your emissions simply by watching what you eat.

HERE IS HOW!

1
The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years.

2
Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level.

3
The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade

.

4
At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles.

If the warming continues,
we can expect catastrophic consequences.

5
Deaths from global warming will double in just 25 years -- to 300,000 people a year.

6
Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica , devastating coastal areas worldwide.

7

Heat waves will be more frequent and more intense.

Droughts and wildfires will occur more often.

The Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050.

8
More than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction by 2050.

REDUCE YOUR IMPACT IN YOUR HOME

  1. Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl).
  2. Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer
  3. Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner
  4. Install a programmable thermostat
  5. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases
  6. Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanket
  7. Use less hot water
  8. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible
  9. Turn off electronic devices you're not using
  10. Unplug electronics from the wall when you're not using them
  11. Only run your dishwasher when there's a full load and use the energy-saving setting
  12. Insulate and weatherize your home
  13. Be sure you're recycling at home
  14. Buy recycled paper products
  15. Plant a tree
  16. Get a home energy audit
  17. Switch to green power
  18. Buy locally grown and produced foods
  19. Buy fresh foods instead of frozen
  20. Seek out and support local farmers markets
  21. Buy organic foods as much as possible
  22. Avoid heavily packaged products
  23. Eat less meat

REDUCE YOUR IMPACT WHILE ON THE MOVE

Almost one third of the carbon dioxide produced in the United States comes from our cars, trucks and airplanes. Here are some simple, practical things you can do to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide you produce while on the move.

  1. Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible
  2. Start a carpool with your coworkers or classmates
  3. Keep your car tuned up
  4. Check your tires weekly to make sure they're properly inflated
  5. When it is time for a new car, choose a more fuel efficient vehicle
  6. Try car sharing
  7. Try telecommuting from home
  8. Fly less
